One of the questions I’m asked most frequently is “where did you get that rug?!” and the answer is always – it’s a vintage Turkish rug, one-of-a-kind… but I have rounded up the best places to buy affordable vintage Turkish runners and rugs below!
A couple things to know about buying Turkish (aka Persian) rugs online…
- you may see some GORGEOUS accounts on Instagram with beautifully curated selections – and their prices reflect that. a WAY cheaper option is to shop direct. and by direct, I mean that every single Turkish rug I owned has shipped straight from Turkey <– this is way less complicated than it sounds, keep reading 😉
- Measure – convert – and measure again. Many of the vintage rugs you’ll see for sale aren’t standard rug sizes. And many are also measured in centimeters versus inches – so measure your space to find the max dimensions you could use and then make sure you’ve converted properly. I use this online converter.
- Ask for a discount! I’ve found that tons of shops will offer you a discount if you ask – the worst they can say is no.
- Make sure you REALLY
closely look at the photos of the rug to spot any imperfections. I *unfortunately* overlooked a kind of major imperfection on my new rug for my closet and I don’t think it’s worth sending back, but it was 100% my fault that I missed it in the pics.
I love my vintage T

What Is A Turkish vs Oushak Rug?
If you’re wondering what is a Turkish rug vs a Persian rug vs an Oushak rug… I’ve got you! Basically…
Oushak is a region of Turkey and designs from here generally feature center medallions with smaller geometric designs. As far as Turkish rugs vs Persian rugs, the knotting style is different. #themoreyouknow.
RugNerd says
I bought a turkish rug from turkey on Etsy. It was one of the worst Etsy experiences I’ve had. The seller said they took paypal, but then asked for payment through some Other service because they dont actually have Paypal in turkey, and his other service does not offer the same buyer protection that paypal does.
They were slow to respond to messages (days would go by without a reply), lied about when things shipped (rug shipped a full week after they said it did), sent me a damp rug that somehow changed color between taking the listing photo and my receiving it (it was so different they thought they sent the wrong rug at first…) refused to take a return or refund, and instead made me go through the whole process of them lying about when things shipped etc again to get a replacement.
Basically, not everyone will have a bad seller like this, but please do be aware that Paypal is nolonger a thing in Turkey and their payment processor wont offer buyer protection. Use a CC instead of a bank card so you can do a charge back if you need to.
