If you’ve ever had a baby with cradle cap, you know how stubborn it can be. All my babies have had cradle cap at some point or another and I’ve found the easiest, natural way to ban it – here’s how to get rid of cradle cap naturally!

What is Cradle Cap?
It’s basically seborrheic dermatitis, which causes dandruff for adults but in babies, it looks like thick and flaky skin on baby’s scalp. The scales or flakes can be yellow or brown-ish and can be oily or dry.
Does Cradle Cap hurt?
It doesn’t hurt but and it’s totally harmless (yay!) but it can look gross, so I opt to remove it when I can.

Auggie’s cradle cap – see the little brown flakes? we’re gonna get rid of those
How to Get Rid of Cradle Cap
It’s actually super easy! You’ll find tons of home remedies on getting rid of cradle cap but this is what I’ve found works best – it’s natural and gentle on baby’s scalp!
You only need 2 things – this all-over ointment and this flexible silicone scalp brush. You could probably even use a comb, but I’ve found that this brush is super gentle and feels more like a scalp massage than a scalp scrape.

The All-Over Ointment is an MVP and the 3.5oz size goes a long way. Love that it’s a natural product, works on sensitive/eczema-prone skin, and it washes out of anything. TONS of 5-star reviews too. A lot of people recommended it for Auggie’s baby acne but, truthfully, we had to use Hydrocortisone cream to clear that up. BUT I am still a fan of the All-Over Ointment for lots of other stuff :).
I actually grabbed this scalp brush for me to use to help with postpartum hair loss. The flexible silicone ‘spikes’ both exfoliate and stimulate blood/oil flow, which can help prevent dandruff and help regrow hair. But I found that using it on Cradle Cap also works as a great, gentle exfoliator.
How I Removed Cradle Cap
- Wash baby’s hair like normal.
- Slather on a thick coat of the All-Over Ointment right before bed. Don’t worry if the ointment gets on bedding, it washes out without staining.
- In the morning, use the silicone brush to try to brush out as many flakes as possible.
- Rinse baby’s hair with water.
- Brush using the silicone brush again.
The difference is night and day! And this Cradle Cap solution is totally natural and gentle on baby’s scalp – no dandruff shampoos or oils needed.

after! look at that cute fuzzy scale-free baby head 🙂

Did this get rid of the cradle cap for good? Or do you have to continually use this as maintenance to keep it from coming back?

Hey Kendra! For us, it was a one-time thing. But even if you had to repeat, it likely wouldn’t be super frequent. Hope that helps!

Almond oil works too. Just put on cradle cap “spots” and leave for 10 mins. Then, scrape each little “scab” off. And it smells really good! 🙂

Hi! Can I do this on my almost two year old’s cradle cap? Will it cause any hair loss?
